Greetings, Tribe!
So…I have these running goals. Like to run a marathon in every state and to qualify for the Boston Marathon. Well, to do the second one, I have to start running faster.
My awesome coach has me doing shorter distances this spring, with the mission of running them faster.
It was, and still is, difficult to not be training for a Spring marathon, but sometimes goals take sacrifices that we didn’t see coming.
It’s also a challenge to find races when you work every day of the week.
Luckily, I found a local 5k that was on a Sunday. A day that I don’t have any work commitments until the afternoon! Score!
The Love Struck 5k was a cute, fun run. You register as “single,” “taken,” or “it’s complicated” and then your bib is assigned to you accordingly.
I expected a few hundred people, but the morning started in the teens temperature wise, and the actual feel was in the single digits, so it was a small crowd to say the least. After putting on two pairs of tights and three layers on top, we headed to the start line.
My goal was to run fast and not die. I can do anything for a 5k, right?
There was an ice patch half a block long that we had to maneuver going out and coming back (it was a loose course). Don’t get me started on that! My nose, I swear, froze before we hit the first mile marker, so breathing through my nose was a no go. Adam ran behind me the whole way and I was determined that he wouldn’t pass me.
Thank goodness the sun was shining, otherwise that frigid breeze would have been unbearable. Before I knew it, the finish line was ahead. And then Adam shot in front of me, I tried to push him to the side (literally), but gosh darn it! He beat me by one second!!!

Heartbreaking.
Ok. Not really. But dang it!!!!
Super proud with my time. Especially considering I had to maneuver a HUGE ice patch twice and my nose was frozen most of the time.
We headed back into the local brewery to enjoy some celebratory beer when it occurred to us to check the results. We both won our age groups!! (Not hard with less than 100 people in attendance, but so cool nonetheless!)

Now it’s time to prepare for a 10k race.
Until then, happy trails!
