This Spring I was stoked to run two marathons and knock off two more states from my 50 State Marathon goal. Yeah, that didn’t happen. The Tobacco Road Marathon in North Carolina cancelled this year entirely and gave us entries for next year’s race (very generous!) and the Brookings Marathon in South Dakota is postponed until September.
While it seems as though life is at a standstill, I have kept running. My coach has decreased the intensity of our runs and is just helping us focus on building a strong foundation.
I’ll admit, it is hard to stay motivated when there isn’t a race on the horizon. There were several days where it was a struggle to run. My legs were so heavy and I couldn’t imagine how I could get my body to finish the run home. Then it hit me: I’m anemic! I know the feeling I get when I’m iron-deficient, and yet I forget to prevent it with supplements! Well, now I’m on iron twice a day and the sun is starting to shine again on my running.
Then came the plantar fasciitis. I get this occasionally and it usually only lasts a couple of days. This time, however, was more painful than usual. It hurt to walk no matter the shoes I was wearing. Not cool. I iced from dawn to dusk, stretched, wore compression socks and finagled nightly foot massages. My run streak continued, but for 3 days in a row I only ran one mile. One day I added some cycling, and dang! My butt still hurts!!!
My body is feeling back in order and I’m looking forward to my runs again. All is right with the world (well, my running world, that is)
Stay safe and happy trails!
